DOT HazMat 101

Course Introduction

This introductory course is required if you directly handle or affect hazardous material or waste transportation safety. This course includes a brief introduction to HazMat and then focuses on job specific training on one or two of the following tasks: Loading, unloading, preparing, transporting, and preparing manifests or placarding for hazardous material shipments. This course meets and exceeds the task specific training requirements for job specific DOT regulations.

Topics Include

  •  Requirements of the DOT regulations relative to the transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Basic safety elements, including recognition and identification of hazardous materials, as required by the DOT regulations.
  • Basic operations required for handling emergencies involving hazardous materials for the DOT Hazmat Employee.
  • Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101), Labels and Placards, and Shipping Papers.
  • DOT hazard classes and associated them with the appropriate placards for use in transportation.

Then choose up to 2 of the following task specific topics:

  •  Packaging
  • Loading/ Unloading
  • Transporting
  • Preparing manifests
  • Placarding

This course meets and exceeds the task specific training requirements for job specific DOT regulations.

How long is the certification good for?

Retraining for this course is required per the DOT standard every 3 years.
